Wild Dreams.

Well, it’s begun. I’ve started the book.

Strangely, despite thinking that this is what authors required, I didn’t have to have total silence, a large vat of proper coffee, all in a beautiful summerhouse at the bottom of a perfectly manicured garden complete with Mac computer, mini fridge and the requisite six packets of ginger nuts available to nibble on, or rather, devour. No.

In actual fact, I was on a rather hot and steamy underground train, tapping away on my phone with a gentleman’s less than savoury armpit six inches from my face and a small child with a scooter cracking it into my shins every two minutes.

I think that I’ve had a rather childish dream of writing romantic novels (please note the use the word ‘novels’ rather than ‘books’; I am nothing if not ambitious, also rather deluded), yes, romantic novels in a perfect little setting where the sun always shines and a proud husband occasionally taps tentatively on the door with offerings of pots of tea or lunch on a tray for his hard working and tremendously successful wife, The Novelist. Oooh yes, I’m warming to my theme! Visions of sitting holding court on Graham Norton’s sofa are springing to mind; lunches with Stephen Fry to discuss plot lines and evenings with previous Nobel Prize winners in literature ….. ooooh yes! (Or do you have to be dead to be a winner?? Might have to rethink that one…)

But just momentarily back to reality as The Colonel (aka Husband Dearest) marches up the stairs wearing nothing but a pair of pants and one sock, peers around the bedroom door to see me tapping away in bed, glasses perched on the end of my nose and muttering like a faintly mad thing.

“Do we actually have any clean socks in this house, or shall I wear a pair of the boys Star Wars ones for meeting the General this morning?” A rather withering look from him, a muffled yelp from yours truly from beneath the soft feathery down of the duvet and I bound out of bed in search of clean socks and an ironed shirt and revert guiltily back to wifely duties.

I clearly have ideas substantially above my station, those of grandeur and success. I am also, as most of you know, slightly unhinged. But, if you can’t dream then how does one progress?

So I shall continue to dream about summerhouses, expensive computers and a housekeeper perhaps to ensure that clean and ironed laundry is continually available to every member of the family, and possibly guests as well.

But one thing I don’t need to dream about is writing. I don’t need to dream about the pleasure that writing actually gives me. And if finally, a long way down the road I manage to finish such a thing as a book, then yes, my dreams will have come true. And perhaps meeting Graham Norton and Stephen Fry will have to just wait for another day.

What do you dream of? Do you dream of writing a book … ? What’s stopping you? Xx

  1. Wishing you all the luck in the world with your book – so admire your determination :O) I’d love to write one and have started sooooo many times but was never satisfied enough with what I’d written to continue….

  2. I have two dreams but they both need substantial financing. Who knows maybe one day. And strangely enough I dream of meeting Stephen Fry and be on the Graham Norton show. But the ultimate for me would be to meet Elon Musk (he is bipolar and doesn’t hide it).

  3. Every journey starts with one step, every essay or short story, novel or biography starts by taking up the metaphorical (or actual I suppose in some cases) pen. You can if you will and you are so have at it. I am certain the result will be widely enjoyed and I don’t say that lightly. Listen to your heart ❤️

  4. Well done on starting !! Giving me inspiration. I am always going to start a book but still haven’t. I think I need set deadlines. I did an Arts degree ….so much writing and all on time…so it must be that lack of deadline in my case and my distracting wifely duties 😉

    1. You see, you’re far more clever than me (or is it I??) …! My husband is away for a couple of days so I’m hoping to write like a demon, but there’s always ‘stuff’ to do, things like dealing with an ants nest yesterday (grim!) and there’s a military wives coffee morning this morning (how sad am I?!). I think I must just set myself a deadline like for your Arts degree. 🙂🙂

      1. But how do we set them ourselves !!?? I am hopeless it seems. Always finding stuff to do. And Arts unbeknown to naive me was sooooo much writing. AND I did a minor in writing and I am still floundering around. So you are already doing a better job than me. 😊😊 . Eeewww ants have buggered off here atm..too cold..but will be back. Military wives coffee morning sounds tres posh !

      2. Ha! I fear it will be the usual bombardment of questions somewhat akin to the Spanish Inquisition. You see, it’s a hierarchy thing and for the new girl on the patch which is what I am, everyone likes to know where you sit; ie whether you are soldier or officers wife and at what rank your husband is at. It’s almost like the class system … working, lower, middle, upper and Aristocracy! And God forbid should you move up a level without them! Thankfully I’m new to this military life and long enough in the tooth to not let it worry me and can find it rather amusing … but when walking through the door and the scavengers for information start hovering, ready to pounce, it can make one want to run for the door asap! X

      3. Oh god !! I can sort of understand the Spanish Inquisition scenario being a Brit living in Oz. 😉😉. As soon as I start to speak in a new group or well even down the bloody shops out come the most random questions 😂😂. The class system seems to be list here. There’s Bogans and non Bogans from what I can gather !!

  5. Good for you! I’ll be queuing up to buy it! You write so beautifully – heartfelt and funny and all other lovely adjectives I can think of – and I’ve often read your blog thinking “she should write a book” so I’m thrilled that you’ve now got started! Not least because I share your dream and have a half arsed draft that’s been gathering dust for a couple of years. It’s funny because when you list the things you thought you’d need you’re accounting for the stuff I use as excuses in my own head for not getting on with it. As they say, there is no time like the present and I’m going to use your resolve and get-go as inspiration to get myself in gear too. ……….do you fancy a writing partner? Might keep us both motivated and could also share drafts and be critical and kind to help each other along! I’m serious and we’re both in London so just shout in that case. Besides, I think you’re awesome so I’ll throw that out there regardless in case you fancy a cuppa some time. Anna x

  6. One of my blogger friends on here is an author who…wait for it…HAS a summerhouse at the end of her beautiful garden where she pens most of her work. Her blog link is http://www.funnylass.com. So dream away, because it may become a reality one day. I mean, who would have thought years ago that you would be riding a bicycle around France with baguettes sticking out your basket?Go for it. I for one, would buy your books because I know they would have me howling with laughter 🙂

  7. This was so good! I pictured you just giving him an exasperated look over your glasses as he asked about the socks. I think we can all relate to that one!😜 My dreams usually include bizarre locations that seem familiar but strange, and dead people. Because that’s not creepy at all.😂 I do dream of finally finishing the damn “novel”, but being scatterbrained and prone to quitting one project to start another, I never do.

  8. Congrats on starting! You’re an AMAZING writer, and I can’t wait to buy the book. Writing, and actually making money from it, has been a dream of mine for years. In the real world, I do pretty much the exact opposite, and, while I love my co-workers, etc, I miss writing, and my blog has been the first step towards my dream of really using my passion and talent on a more regular basis. I’d also love to be a stay at home mom, but I’m not sure if/when that will ever happen. 😦

    1. That is so kind of you. I wish I’d been able to do this years ago, but in truth I was pretty busy being a single mum and most of the time working two jobs. I didn’t have the time (although I know that one can always find it), the energy or the motivation. I had started a childrens book but floundered at the early stages. It’s still there and I’ll come back to it eventually but for now I need to focus on this one and get it done. Time will tell. You write beautifully and I know you have a book or six in you! Let’s keep at it, we’ll get there! Katie. X

  9. Great to see that there are others those who among us that dream, dreaming beats real life into a cocked hat a great deal of the time. Go for it write your novel knock it up on scraps of paper, whilst on trains, in a cafe over coffee or in a library get the words and thoughts down share them with the world. My novel started life in 2010 whilst still working running a business, when I retired in 2016 the word count was only around the five thousand mark. I have joined my local U3A writing group, so meet regularly those who dream of writing. Mutual support and encouragement are great the people in the group are diverse in their backgrounds but in my opinion talented. As we are in our later years the need to publish and share our thoughts whilst we are all above ground has spurred us on to produce a collection of our work due out later this year. My novel is progressing, I have sold one piece of writing and it has been published.

    1. That is wonderful! And what pride you must have and justifiably so. Thanks so much for reading. Weirdly although I think that I need certain comforts around me, I’ve discovered that writing on the tube is the best. I cannot claim to have any understanding of why, the words just fly out. Quite extraordinary. I shall start going on the circle line round and round me-thinks! Thanks for reading … you’re most kind. Katie

  10. Hi
Thank you. I am happy to see your wonderful post. It gives me a thoughtful thinking and am  happy for that. That is always my intention to see a post that gives me happiness.

This is just a little contribution to this post.

Dreams are very different from waking life, but it is extremely difficult clearly to define in what the difference consists. When we are dreaming, we are nearly always convinced that we are awake, and in some cases real experiences have been mistaken for dreams.

Sometimes even after waking, we may be doubtful whether our dream was a reality or not, especially if we happen to fall asleep in our chair and do not remember the circumstance of having fallen to sleep.

Sometimes dreamers do have feeling of wonder at their strange experiences.

Am happy  to share at least a part of that happiness and love here as am commenting now.

    Cheers,

    PATRICK
