I only go to the hairdresser when two factors are simultaneously in alignment. To be fair, it’s a rare occurrence. They are as follows:
1) The bank account is in the black, and
2) My dear husband remarks that my hair is looking a little ‘tired’. This is dangerous territory for any man, however this one’s no fool and would only ever pass comment when a) the hair situation is on the brink of becoming dire, b) there is a door between us and c) I am not hormonal.
However, in the knowledge that there have been no options/hairdressers open to us, he has wisely kept his counsel of late. However even I am aware that the benchmark of ‘dire’ had been passed even before we went into lockdown.
So, I tentatively asked him if he’d like to cut my hair. Nothing difficult, just a good inch or two into a neat bob.
Within almost undignified speed, I was whisked into the bathroom and plonked unceremoniously on a kitchen stool by my husband who alongside a look of utter jubilation, had adopted a rather dubious French accent.
“Just don’t bother ask me about my summer vacation plans” I twittered nervously as I watched him don the sharpest pair of kitchen scissors. Oh dear God, those two glinting blades, so close to my ears of which I was suddenly rather sentimental, and more importantly, my jugular. I did hope he was planning on wearing his glasses.
Standing behind me, he took my head between his hands and as I glanced at him in the mirror, his face took on a look of total concentration, and then, he silently got to work.
An hour later and a perfectly sleek blonde bob hung neatly just below my still intact ears. As to who was more delighted, I’m not entirely sure. But one thing is for certain, should he ever need a new career I think he’d make the most fabulous dog groomer, sheep shearer or possibly even a hairdresser …

Thankfully there are two hairdressers in my family and getting in because you’re the favorite aunt is a plus. I currently kind of like my job, it is not what I was called to do with my life. I am now chasing that it will take about four to six years. I already have an associates degree in healthcare and pharmacy practice and while it is kind of what I want to do it certainly helped steer me in the direction that I want to go. When I am done I would like to have a PHD in Psychology. It will be a lot of work but I will get it done! I want to help young widows as some people believe grief is grief, it is not, and since I now have experience (not that I wanted it) in such matters, I believe I would be very good at it. I know without a doubt that, that is my correct path for life.

First of all … very, very lucky you with two hairdressers in the family – you’re set up for life! Secondly, I am so impressed with your career path! … what a wonderful direction to be going in. I’m so sorry that you have had to experience grief in this way … The psychology will undoubtedly be absolutely fascinating and what a useful knowledge you will then have to help so many people. Hats off ma’am!

I’m trying to figure out if there’s any way the Colonel could zoom onto my head and virtually cut my hair—assuming he would be willing to add another …oh my, the word “scalp” came to mind. Let’s forget about it. I’ll just pretend there’s an aging, unkempt stranger who’s sheltering with my husband and me.
But good for you and good for him!

Lmao. Hahahhaha! That was so funny!! Really sounds like you have an awesome relationship! And wow, that’s amazing how he was so confident AND did a good job. Or was it just desperation? 😅
I offered to rescue a girl’s hair last year after they impulsively cut it short, and they wanted it quietly sorted out without having to see a hairdresser etc. So I was interested to see how this story went. In my case I also did a good job, and I can understand his pride! 😀

I can understand both of you feeling enormous pride! After all, a woman’s hair is her pride and joy and imagine the repercussions had it all have gone horribly wrong! In truth, I suspect there was indeed an element of desperation … from us both! I have to say that I’m mightily impressed at your bravery for offering to do the girl’s hair … as a matter of interest, had you ever done this before … have any previous experience … 😂?!

Having given up on hair for lent one year and it left in a huff never to return i have no conception of this hair fear thingy. But I understand a lot of people do so well done. Has Hub adopted onions as the necklace du jour? Maybe a casual blue an white sailor jumpsuit with bastille epaulettes? And i assume he is now styled Monsieur Jean-Jacques or similar.
Btw i was listening to this tremendous podcast called Fortunately with Jane Garvey and Fi Glover and they were discussing permed eyebrows.
Are yours sufficiently Albert Einstein to go the full Gloria Gaynor or am i being too personal

Permed eyebrows?!?! That’s wonderfully extraordinary! I’m definitely not in the Einstein category but if I was, would my husband have married me?! Of that I am unsure. Thankfully he’s not adopted the onion look as yet, but bearing in mind that France is where we’d like to end up, I think there’s a distinct possibility of a new look in the future. Ahhh the life of baguettes, fromage et beaucoup de vin rouge …. yup I’m in heaven just thinking about it! Might just go and check on my eyebrows though …

Wow, I am seriously impressed! Congrats to you and your husband. I wouldn’t let my husband within one milometer of my hair. (Although, on reflection, that isn’t strictly true. He is a dab hand with a Babyliss Big Hairstyler!) This might be because I’ve witnessed his pruning skills in the garden. I also have a fringe to which I am surgically attached. I have had a fringe all my life and I cannot underestimate the necessity of it being exactly the right length!
I loved my career as a teacher and then a teacher trainer. It was challenging at times but never, ever boring! If my skill set had been different, I would have loved to be a vet.

I started to reply and then I think I accidentally deleted it! Oops! I understand completely about the fringe … too long and it goes in the eyes, too short and it just doesn’t work. Mine is just growing out now and I can just about tuck it behind my ears. After what you said and with hindsight, I think I should have taken my husbands previous pruning experience into account … I once caught him with a hedge trimmer having a go at the topiary and taking off all the growth on wisteria that was due to flower … hmmm. Well done you for teaching – you must have a lovely nature and be very calm and patient. That’s truly lovely. A vet I can imagine would be very rewarding too (except I don’t think I’d be much good with grumpy dogs and sharp teeth … a bit scary for a wuss like me). I think you’d have been good at whatever you chose – as frankly anyone who can teach is a saint in my book!

We inherited a wisteria when we bought our current house. It’s about 50 years old. I always get a bit panicky when my husband prunes it, but to be fair, he seems to get excellent results. I even took a video of the wisteria in bloom this year #lockdowninsanity He’s still not getting anywhere near my fringe! Thank you for your very kind words about teaching. i think my former students, especially in London, would be rolling about on the floor with hysterical laughter! I like to think I was strict but fair…

Wonderful! I’m so jealous .. I love wisteria and it’s wonderfully therapeutic to prune! Strict but fair is the best way … I try to be that to my children but frankly I’m too soft. In my defence though (!) I had to be both mother and father and therefore needed to choose my battles! Have a lovely weekend and I hope you have some good weather. Ps have found yet another amazing website with beautiful french houses for sale and now have upped our looking online to about three hours a day!! Bearing in mind we can’t buy anything for at least five years, I think we’re a little premature in our search, but oh it’s so much fun!

I remember telling a fellow blogger and a good friend how my hair now resembles a nest! I should be careful for there are pigeons around where I stay 😀 And I have half a mind to bleach, colour my hair lilac or indigo given the ‘nesting period’ will continue. And I used to longer hair, inspired by Mick Jagger then coloured it purple inspired by Katy Perry, then pink, the navy blue and finally chopped them off to go back to what my mother tells perfect black hair!! Argh!
If I had to choose a different career, on a serious note I would like to be a teacher, a professor and if I can be creative with my answer I would like to work at Vogue or any of the fashion magazines if only if it is in New York City! Brave gal.
I’ve been to the Mexican chop shop a few times (my wife being Mexican)
As a kid i wanted to be an interior designer or architect. After a million factory jobs in my teens. I randomly went to university to hopefully play guitar for 8 hours a day. Suddenly microchip design became my forte. In later life I flit between steel erecting for major buildings and designing microchips.
I guess in a weird way i because an interior designer and an architect?

In the Uni studios no, but i had a 32-channel studio set up in my tiny flatlet in halls (2001). One of my halls mates was an ace guitarist and a gal upstairs played bass.
We’d play till silly o’clock recording into my computer and hacked up mixing desk. There are a fair few recordings
So I guess yes, i.played at uni. I still have a guitar (from ’92) but really don’t play it often enough.
